NATIONALPARK FORUM: Golden eagle & Co.

The Gesäuse National Park, the only national park in Styria and its largest area where nature can develop freely, has been observing breeding pairs of golden eagles and peregrine falcons for years.
In mid-March, precisely in these days, the female eagle usually lays two eggs in an eyrie and incubation can begin. This is also the time for Magdalena Kaltenbrunner, a staff member in the Gesäuse National Park, to observe the flights of the golden eagles and deduce which nests are currently being incubated. What she has found out about the golden eagles, about the first golden eagle transmitter in Austria and more about the birds of prey of the Gesäuse can be heard at this year's National Park Forum.

For Herbert Wölger, Managing Director of the National Park Society, the forum was established by provincial law to inform the population about the National Park: "I hope that many will accept our invitation to learn facts at first hand and discuss one topic or another with us."

Birds of prey are threatened by habitat loss, lead in wildlife remains and other factors. Incomprehensibly, individuals of the human species do not stop preying on these animals either. Their protection is therefore of great concern to the National Park.
Magdalena Kaltenbrunner, a native of South Tyrol, got a coveted job at the National Park after studying forestry in Vienna. Ringing and transmitting young eagles shortly before they fledged was an extraordinary experience for the experienced eagle observer and the highlight of her career so far. At the forum, she will report on her experiences, on the status of the birds of prey and what we can do to protect them, together with Alexander Maringer, Head of Research at the National Park.
