Reading "Papa Lalalaya

In Memoriam Hermann Buhl - the daughter Kriemhild Buhl reads from her book "Papa Lalalaya".

"Papa Lalalaya", said the little girl Kriemhild when asked where her daddy was - she was one and a half years old at the time. Today, author Kriemhild Buhl is 70 years old and reads from her touching book "Papa Lalalaya - the family story of extreme mountaineer Hermann Buhl".

The "Gesäuse National Park" invites you to the event "In Memoriam Hermann Buhl - the daughter Kriemhild Buhl reads from her book "Papa Lalalaya" at the Gasthof Kölblwirt on Thursday, 6 October 2022 at 7:00 pm.

Kriemhild Buhl takes us on a journey to the Himalayas and to the first ascent of Nanga Parbat by her father Hermann Buhl. It is 1953 and when her father returns, he is famous, a "rock star". The hero of the nation. His life picks up speed rapidly, as does the life of his family. They are hectic, chaotic, dazzling years. He writes a book "Eight thousand over and under"which becomes a bestseller and is still a longseller today. He gives lectures at home and abroad. For the men he becomes a role model, for the women an idol, they write him love letters and he has trouble convincing his own wife Generl that he is only interested in one thing, namely her, only her ... and of course the mountains. He begets two more daughters with her, who hardly get to know him because he is away so much. He is obsessed with mountaineering and success, he still has plans for a long life...

However, Hermann Buhl can only enjoy the fame of being the first climber of an eight-thousander for a short time. Just four years after his solo ascent of Nanga Parbat, he manages to organise a second expedition to the Himalayas, together with three Salzburgers. Broad Peak becomes his second first ascent of an eight-thousander, which only Kurt Diemberger, apart from him, is to achieve. After this second eight-thousander - again without artificial oxygen - Buhl and his friend Diemberger undertake another "pleasure tour" to the 7654-metre Chogolisa - in the Western Alpine style, without porters or intermediate camps. Shortly before the summit, the two are surprised by a snowstorm, they have to turn back, they can no longer see anything, Buhl steps on a snow cornice and falls with it into the depths. There he has been lying in the eternal ice of the Baltoro Glacier ever since.

What happens next?

Kriemhild Buhl describes the tragedy of a family trying to cope with life in the shadow of myth. She describes how wives of heroes often play a supporting role in their own lives and are only forced by the death of their partner to build their own identity, to develop their own perspective...

This reading promises to be an exciting and touching evening - don't miss it!
