Successful chamois census in the Ges\u00e4use<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although the king of the forest - the red deer with its majestic rutting call - currently seems to own the stage in the Gesaeuse forests, last week's annual census was nevertheless devoted to the Gesaeuse's actual characteristic game species, the chamois.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In order to avoid double counting, professional hunters and foresters of the Steierm\u00e4rkische Landesforste, employees of the Grabnerhof and the Ges\u00e4use National Park counted chamois in thirty specially selected areas at exactly the same time, from early morning to midday, and the results were more than satisfactory: the number of packs and the pack strength increased slightly again compared to the previous year, including a gratifyingly large number of strong fawns in good health.<\/p>\n

\"Old bucks, however, were hardly to be seen - on this sunny and hot autumn day, they probably retreated into their shady mountain pine dwellings,\" suspects Hegemeister and Forest Director Andreas Holzinger.<\/p>\n

The large number of mountain hikers on this day was in any case no problem for the wild animals, as the guests largely kept to the marked paths and trails. The curiosity of the chamois was thus greater than their escape distance.<\/p>\n
