The Gesäuse CleanUP Days 2021

Cleaning up together for untouched nature

On 4 and 5 September 2021 in the Gesäuse in Styria, the motto will be: tackle and clean up together. Guests and locals alike will set out in Corona-compliant small groups to rid nature of litter. The event is organised by the Allgäu initiative Patron Plasticfree Peaks in cooperation with the Gesäuse National Park, the Steirische Eisenwurzen Nature and Geopark and the Gesäuse Tourism Association.

The idea of the Gesäuse CleanUP Days is quickly explained: numerous nature enthusiasts voluntarily set off in small groups to collect rubbish together on mountain peaks, along hiking trails, on river banks, etc. - in fact, wherever rubbish has been left behind. Those who take part can expect not only the wonderful feeling of having set an example for nature, but also a special kind of outdoor experience together.

Each participant receives a free "CleanUP Kit" for their tour, consisting of a recyclable and reusable fabric bag and a pair of tongs made of high-quality stainless steel. These are financed by a sponsor network of regional and national partners.

Registration and coordination of routes is done via the CleanUP map at www.plasticfreepeaks.com. If you want to take part, enter the date and route of your tour on the map. The collected rubbish can then be handed in at one of the rubbish collection points in the region. Waste collection points as well as pick-up points for the CleanUP Kits are also listed on the CleanUP Map. Every participant has the chance to win valuable prizes from the raffle. The main prize is a voucher for two nights at a Gesäuse Nature Park Resort partner business.

Meet & Greet on Saturday

On Saturday, 4 September, the joint work will be celebrated at a "Meet & Greet". The Genussmosthof Veitelbauer in St. Gallen invites you to an open cellar door day from 3:30 pm. Together with the participants of the CleanUP Days, the organisers will celebrate the culture, cuisine and music of the region.

The event takes up the established "Xeis Clean" of recent years, continues it and makes it accessible to a larger number of volunteers. "The mission of our team is to preserve the Gesäuse landscape and its wild nature. The CleanUP Days make a valuable contribution to this because everyone can lend a hand." Says Marco Schiefer, project manager at the Gesäuse National Park. Together with the Steierische Eisenwurzen Nature and Geopark and the Gesäuse Tourism Association, he has made it his mission to ensure that everything runs smoothly on site.

With the Gesäuse CleanUP Days, Patron Plasticfree Peaks is following up on the success of the three CleanUP events in the Allgäu region from 2019 to 2021, during which almost 2,000 people collected over three tonnes of waste. In 2021, the CleanUP concept of the young Allgäuers will be spread beyond the Allgäu region for the first time. As part of the CleanUP Tour, Patron is organising five events in the German and Austrian Alpine region.
